Thieves entered through the coal chute, forced four doors, and, opened two fireproof doors before reaching the office. The safe was found yesterday morning with the side ripped off, apparently with a crowbar. The thieves failed to penetrate the drawers, where a considerable sum was secreted. The circumstances of the death of Lionel Joseph Bellve, 32 years, a jeweller, of Victoria Street, Hamilton, who was found dead in his -shop on Monday were investigated by the Coroner yesterday, when a verdict of suicide was returned. It was shown in evidence that the body was found lying on a mattress on the floor, with the end of a. gas tube in the mouth. Near the body was a rifle with a live cartridge and the trigger cocked.
