RESCUE AT SEA.
GERMAN STEAMER ON FIRE. FLAMES SIXTY FEET HIGH.
CAPTAIN’S HEROIC RETURN TO SHOOT PIG.
(Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 26. A thrilling story was unfolded when the Rangitata docked at Southampton with ten passengers, including two women, two children and fifty-three of the crew of the German steamer Targis. A New Zealander, Mr. W. Strict, told interviewers that the Rangitata saw at nine o’clock in the morning What seemed like a cloud on the horizon, but later was discovered to be a pall of white smoke enveloping the Targis, from which flames were seen shooting upwards for sixty feet, licking the mast-
head. The Rangitata picked up the passengers and crew, some of whom had burned hands as the result of sliding down ropes against the red hot hull. Captain Frasing, of the ill-fated steamer, made a heroic return to the Targis on the humane mission of shooting a pig which had been left in the deckhouse. Captain Munter said he had never seen such a blaze. The heat was uncomfortable even at the distance at which the Rangitata was hove to.
