SPECTACULAR FIRE.
TIMBER MILL & BOX FACTORY DESTROYED. CITY PLUNGED INTO DARKNESS. PALMERSTON N., July 27. r The timber mill and box factory owned by Wm. Cook and Sons was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The blaze was probably the largest and most destructive in Palmerston North for a number of years. Certainly it was the most spectacular. The flames, fanned by .a strong westerly breeze, had gripped the whole .structure before the brigade arrived on the scene, although advised of the outbreak by the private automatic alarm system installed in the mill. The fire fighters confined their efforts to saving the adjoining buildings land timber stacks covering about an acre of ground. It is estimated that the loss is *£15,000, while a large number of men will be thrown out of work. The firemen had several narrow escapes. The city was thrown into darkness as a result of the flames melting the fuses on the main feeder, while the telegraph lines connecting with Hawke’s Bay were broken. — (P.A.)
