THE RACING WORLD.

NEWS, NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Wellington autumn meeting, which commences this week, should provide excellent sport. The Thompson Handicap field could hardly be improved upon, and with the exception of Paganelli and Toxeuma (non-accept-ors) contains all the best milers in the Dominion. This event will be the star item on Saturday. Austerity, Royal Opera and ■ St. Melba are Masterton horses engaged on Saturday for minor events at Trentham. After Royal Opera’s recent good form at Napier Park, the local horse should give a god account of himself in the mile hack. Austerity has not had a run for several weeks, but the local mare ran some excellent races before having a let up. She should soon be ready to show her true form. The recent form of St. Melba points to him running prominently. Autopay is likely to be one of the well backed candidates for the Plunket Nursery Handicap, and the Paper Money colt should go very close to winning. Although he has not had a race since winning a double at Wanganui, T. Pritchard will have him in nice order for Saturday next. Featherston stables will be represented by Appledore, Vertigern, Tenterden and Grecian on Saturday. Appledore is a promising juvenile and Tenterden is expected to make a good showing against Paganelli and Cimabue in the Challenge Stakes. Lady Pam is reported to be galloping well at Trentham. and Mr. Kemball’s two-year-old will not lack supporters in the Nursery Handicap. Trainer Daly has a very high opinion of Lady Pam and he expects further improvement before the season ends. Trainer Wilton has Teri and Portray in nice condition ami he intends leaving for Sydney this autumn, with Teri and possibly Portray or Ramanu (Paper Money—Sunbird), where they will be prepared for early spring racing. Ramanu has just been brought in again after being gelded, and this fine-looking youngster is expected to turn out well as a three-year-old.
