At Kharkov, the trial has commenced of forty-five intellectuals, including twenty of the most prominent Ukranian scholars and scientists, on a charge of counterrevolution. The trial is conducted in the Opera' House, being staged in a blaze of publicity. Tens of thousands are given an opportunity to see and hear the proceedings, which are being filmed and wirelessly broadcasted. It is alleged that the 45 are the ring-leaders-of a conspiracy to free the Ukraine from the Soviet yoke, including preparation for an armed revolt in the coming spring and diseusrione of plans to assassinate Stallin and Voroshilov, receiving funds for the purpose from Poland and from Russians in Paris and Berlin. Serge Yefremov, head of the Ukraine Academy of Science, is accused of being head of the conspirators, and of using the’Academy of Science as a headquarters.
