THE RACING WORLD.
NEWS, NOTES AND COMMENTS. Mr. C. F. Vallance’s Red Fuchsia scored a very important win on the last day of the National meeting, when he led a good field home in the Sydenham Hurdles in record time. The All Red gelding was one of the outsiders of the field and returned a handsome dividend. His stable mate, Locarno, who had shaped well in the National Hurdles, was much better fancied than Red Fuchsia, but he could only finish a moderate seventh. Courageous ran his best race to date when he beat all but Royal Ghme in the big mile and a quarter on Thursday last. He is credited with showing a great burst of speed at the finish and failed to secure first place by a neck. On this showing Courageous can be ticked off fqr a decent handicap very soon. Mr. Kemball’s other horses, Shortly and Thurnbell ran fair races without returning their supporters a dividend. The experience gained by Thurnbell should assist him and he should soon get on the winning list in a hurdle event. Shortly is nominated for Dannevirke and he and Courageous should be hard to beat at the meeting. Glyn Dhu was another locally-owned horse than ran good races at Christchurch, but failed to return a dividend. This young horse shapes well at the finish of his races and should make a good middle distance performer next season. Spearmiss is a local representative appearing in the nominations for Dannevirke this month. As the Grey Spear mare had plenty of racing well into the late autumn, she should soon be at her best for early spring events. Both the National Steeplechase and National Hurdle winners were sired by Day Comet in the Waikato district. Wiltshire’s performance of two starts and two wins was very impressive and as he is quite a young horse he should be capable of adding some more big steeplechases to his credit. Royal Opera should not be long in gaining a winning bracket. In his races at Trentham the local horse was noticed finishing in a very determined manner and with a bit more experience should soon reward his connections. He is engaged at Dannevirke. Pat’s Boy, a stable mate to Thurnbell, although he ran creditably at Riccarton last week, failed to score. He showed a lot of pace early and may not be long in notching a Win. Vesperus was well fancied for a race on Saturday last at Christchurch, but failed to get there. He ran a creditable race and may pick up a stake soon, as he is right back to his best form. The Palmerston owned and trained pacer, Padlock, had a greah innings at Christchurch last week, when he scored three wins in as many starts. As he recorded the fast time of 4min 21 sec for two miles he will find it hard to get through his field in the next Trotting Cup. ______
