FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. (Contributed.) The first representative match played by Wairarapa took place at Greytown in 1880, the opposition being Wellington. The men from over the hill knew a little too much for the locals and Wairarapa went down by one goal and three tries to nil. The Wairarapa team forty-nine years ago was:—Forwards: W. C. Cuff, R. Lee, E. C. W. Porter, T. 8. Ronaldson, J. Snodgrass, P. F. Tancred, F. Tully, T. W. Wardell, E. Webb, A. L. Webster; quarter backs, R. Kemble, John McMaster; half-backs, Girdlestone, W. Hirshberg; full-back, W. H. Day. It is interesting to note that only five l backs were played in those days, such modern positions as five-eighths and three-quarters being unheard of. Matches against Auckland originated only in modern times, although in that year (1880) four Wairarapa players were included in the Wellington team which proceeded to Auckland and lowered that province’s colours by four points to nil. The Wairarapa players were D. Cameron (Greytown), J. McMaster (Greytown), T. 8. Ronaldson (Greytown), and W. Wyllie (Masterton). Of the above old-time players, Messrs John McMaster (Tuhitarata) and A. L. Webster and W. H. Day (Greytown) will be interested spectators at the Shield match against Auckland next Saturday.
