A BRIGHT SHOW.
“THE PUNCH BOWL” AT OPERA HOUSE. CARTERTON AMATEURS’ PRODUCTION. The varied fare presented at. the Masterton Opera House last night by the Carterton Amateurs order the direction of Messrs Owen Cardistou and J. Davidson-Baxter, in the production of “The Punch. Bowl’ 7 was highly appreciated by the audience, who enjoyed every minute of the performance from the rise of the curtain to its f alt ‘ ‘ The Punch Bowl,” with its eighty performers and twenty-two punches, provided never-ending delight in its many beautiful and diversified turns. There were charming vocal items, supported by full choruses, dainty dances and many other novelties too numerous to mention—all executed with ease by the many talented performers. One very effective scene was that in which, during the closing chorus of Good-bye Summer” the audience was showered with “snowballs,” which were returned by the spectators. Another feature of the evening was the screening of a film showing damage in the Nelson district by the recent earthquake. It would be invidious to particularise on the respective performers, as one and all acquitted themselves with credit. Needless to say, however, Mr. Baxter, who is a born comedian, kept the audience in a constant roar of laughter during his highly-amusing acts. The stage settings and the novel and beautiful dressing effects, which were further enhanced by the judicious use of coloured lights, made the scenes very -appealing indeed. Thte orchestra, under the direction of Mr. J. L. Harris, ably demonstrated its capabilities and did much to ensure the success of the production. 'The producers have every reason to be satisfied at the excellent results achieved. Half of the proceeds will he donated to the Mayor’s Earthquake Belief Fund.
