THE RACING WORLD.

NEWS, NOTES AND COMMENTS. Vesperus has gone to Biecarton and is expected to run a good race in the Winter Cup on Tuesday next. The local horse may not begin well enough to secure a good position in the big mile, but the roomy course and long straight will assist him and he may be hard to beat. Red Fuchsia will have a run in the Jumpers-’ Flat race on the first day at Christchurch and the race should help to sharpen him up for the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday next. Although Red Fuchsia ran a bad race at Trantham, he is expected to shape much better next week, where the going should be more to his liking. Thurnbell is likely to give a good account of himself hi the Trial Hurdles on Tuesday next. *He is reported to be in good fettle and several good judges are picking Thurnbell to be an early winner. » Shortly is a local representative that should go close to winning a race during National week at Christchurch. He is engaged in the hjick event on the first day and will be one of the prime fancies on the Tuesday. The big Steeplechase and Winter Cup will be the chief events on Tuesday next and last year’s Steeple winner, Wiltshire, is already on the scene and promises to start favourite on the day. Last year, Wiltshire beat a good one in Beau Cavalier, and as this yeaar’s field does not contain anything better than the Beau, Wiltshire’s position as favourite is justified. He is in splendid fettle and has done everything that has been asked of him in his work. Christchurch race-goers are expecting Lord Ranald to keep the others busy in the Steeplechase. The Southerner has a great record in steeple events and last week defeated two good ones in King’s Guard and Fabriano. The extra distance may find Lord Ranald out, but he will make the race interesting. A big field is expected to contest the Winter Cup. Last year’s winner, Bisox is not engaged, but Kaiti (second) has reached Christchurch and is reported to be in great heart. He is a good beginner and can see out a merry mile—-but there are half a dozen others likely to keep him (busy. Black Duke, Gold Cure, Historic and King Balboa are a quartette with chances. The Grey Spear—Lochiela horse, Willow King, bred in Masterton, still continues to win good races in Queensland, and last month scored a hollow victory in a six furlongs event at Brisbane. A photograph of tho race shows Willow King winning, with the others “nowhere.” A comment on the race mentions that it would have been a good race without Willow King. The Greyspear—Clever Mary gelding, Clever Spear, bred by Mr. E. Newlands, Worksop Road, has been working well at Hawera, and is expected to make good when produced in the spring. The locally-bred gelding has been growing fast and has not (been hurried in his preparation.
