PARLIAMENT.

SPEECHES IN THE FINANCIAL DEBATE. WAITING FOR CHEAP MONEY. (By Telegraph.—“ The Age” Special.) WELLINGTON, August 7. There were three speakers in the House of Representatives to-night, the Hon. J. A. Young (Hamilton), Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West), and Mr C. H. Clinkard (Rotorua), each of whom dwelt at length on financial matters. Mr. Young twitted the Minister of Lands with sheltering behind the statement that offers were too high when the Government sought to purchase from big landowners. Did he not know that he could have put the compulsory clauses into operation and taken that land? This brought from Mr. J. McCombs (Lyttelton) the query: “Why didn't you tell the late Minister that?” and Mr. Young had no answer. Mr. Savage twitted Sir J. Ward with having led the people of New Zealand to believe that he could almost produce millions out of a hat. He said he was waiting for the Government's cheap money to turn up. but was running out of patience, especially as unemployment was so rife.
