SCOUTS AND CUBS.

NOTES ON RECENT ACTIVITIES. During the parade last Friday Evening a Debate was held, the subject being “That Civilization is More Advantageous to Man Than Savagery.” The Rev. W. Bullock (chairman of the Troop Committee) acted as chairman of the meeting and judge of the debate. In opening, Mr. Bullock gave some advice regarding the powers and duties of a chairman, and observed that it was very desirable to hold these debatesi, because one of the aims of scouting was to make boys better citizens both now and in the future. He deplored the fact that so many citizens become almost ” tongue-tied 1 1 when called upon to speak in public. Therefore he hoped these debates, which are held regularly, would help the boys to think clearly and speak plainly. Scouts Chapman, Buckton, and Chesterman were on the affirmative side, while Scouts Richards, Wylie and A. S. M. Armitake opposed the motion. The judge placed the speakers in the following order of merit:—A. S. M. Armitage, Scouts Chesterman, Richards and Buckton (equal marks), Chapman, and Wylie. Curiously enough in the previous debate the order was reversed in some cases. On the motion being put to the meeting it was lost by a substantial majority.

The following is the order of the Patrol Competition up to date:—Tui, Bull-dog, Kiwi, More-pork, Wolves, Lion, Bear, and Hawk Patrols. Arrangements are well in hand for the forthcoming Jamboree to be held in Wellington on August 31, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the foundation of the Scout Movement. At the Court of Honour last Friday the question of a united Display by Wairarapa Troops was fully discussed, and finality was i eached after much consideration. Details to hand from headquarters regarding train arrangements for the Wairarapa are as follow:—Train departs from Masterton at 7.33 a.m. Leaving Wellington on the homeward journey at 5.3(0 p.m. Special concessions in the fare will be as follows:—iScouts (travelling in uniform), 5/- return; general public, first class 10/6 and 7/3 second class (both return). These tickets will only be available on the day (August 3) and only on the special trains referred to abova* The party will arrive in Wellington at 11.29 a.m. and arrangements will be made for their entertainment in the City until the Rally to be held at 2.15 p.m. in the Kilbirme Stadium. On Sunday morning next a ■special Church Parade will be held owing to the special Services of Thanksgiving for the Slug’s recovery. All Scouts and Cubs are reminded to parade at 10.30 a.m.

A Scout Investiture will be held at the “Den” this evening, the examination for which, lads are reminded, will take place in the afternoon. The subject of the debate this evening is "That the time has arrived when the Beautifying Society should be abolished”
