WHOLESALE DUMPING.
THE COMING AMERICAN INVASION. FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER’S WARNING. PROBLEM FOR THE EMPIRE. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SYDNEY, July 3. Addressing the Chamber of Manufactures the Prime Minister, Mr. Bruce, warned his hearers of the probability of wholesale dumping of American goods into British countries in the near future. Mr. Bruce said that the United States, having got most of the gold of the world, had expended the greater portion in increasing her facilities for protection and expanding her factories. She was now concentrating upon a terrific efficiency campaign, and she was going to flood the world with her manufactures in the next few years, and it would be a disastrous flood. Britain was beginning to see that it would need the co-operation of all her Dominions. Mr. Bruce added that there was no better way of tackling the problem than by giving to Britain the market which wc did not ourselves want, thereby keeping the other fellow out. li Being a good Protectionist country/* he said, “and knowing how to deal with people who try to put it over us, we can probably meet this very real danger much more effectively than Britain. I. therefore, urge manufacturers to concentrate first of all upon the manufacture of motor cars.”— (Australian Press Association.)
CANADA READY.
PLAN OF ACTION PREPARED. OTTAWA, July 2. President Hoover’s tariff threats are producing results in Ottawa. It is known that the Government tariff experts are making very careful study of the situation under quite definite instructions. When Congress passes the new tariff measure, the Premier, Mr. King, will be ready to tell Canada his plan to meet the situation. While no details are obtainable, it is credibly stated that the steps to be taken will be more adequate than the Conservatives expect, and that action is not likely to be confined to British preference.—(Australian Press Association.—United Service.)
