MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
OCCUPANTS OF MOTOR CAB PINNED UNDER TRAM.
ACCIDENT IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, July 2. A small motor car was struck by a tramcar in Wellesley Street East this afternoon and was crushed into wreckage against a tramway centrepole. The driver of the car, James Laing, aged 49, residing at Surrey Crescent, Grey Lynn and Robert McEwan, of West Street, Mt. Albert, were pinned in the wrecked car underneath the tram. Twenty-five minutes elapsed before Laing was extricated and a further twenty minutes before McEwan was released, the tram having to be jacked up for the purpose. A large crowd collected and all traffic had to be diverted. Waiting ambulances quickly conveyed the men to hospital. Laing sustained several broken ribs and obrasions and the 'hospital reported tonight that his condition is not serious. McEwan sustained injures to a leg and ankle, together with passible internal injuries, but after treatment at hospital he was tsken home.—(P.A.)
