Painleve pointed out that throughout Europe an influenza epidemic had been most severe, from which in the Rhineland forty soldiers had died in January, 167 in February and 56 in March, to date.—(Australian Press Association.) MEDICAL STAFF OVERrTAXED. PUNISHMENT TO BE METED OUT. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, March 16.
In the Chamber, M. Painleve explained that the medical staff was overtaxed. He took measures himself as soon as he was acquainted with the situation. He deeply regretted the heavy death roll. M. Painleve expressed the opinion that M. Treves was at fault. Punishment would be inflicted without regard to rank or title. Steps had been taken to prevent a repetition. —(Australian Press Association.)
