The great aim of the society, she said, was to keep the we! babies well This was even more im portant than curing the sick babies. The people of the district had always helped generously and trad expressed their appreciation of the ■jnurse’s visits and or the help she had : given th<un. I Some time was occupied in the Magistrate ’s Court yesterday in the hearting of a claim by James J. Culloty, r police constable, formerly of Master . ton, against Thomas Wagg, for the sum t'of £l5 16®. The amount claimed was ; for expenses incurred in coming to ;Masterton from Dunedin as a witness. (Constable Culloty had been subpoenaed as a witness while still stationed ’;in Masterton. The defence contended ‘ that he had been notified after his ? transfer to Dunedin that his prel|sence in Masurton as a witness would ■|ndt be required On behalf of Con'jstable Culloty, it was stated that he 'bad been informed by a Wellington solicitor concerned in the case that he - would be notified if his presence were 'not required. The defence denied that (the word “not” had been used in this -Iconnectivn. Mr D. K. Logan appeared - (for the defendant and Mr C. C. Mar .'sack for Constable Culloty. After shearing evidence and argument, the' (Magistrate (Mr. J. Miller) -said that a t sub} u?.naed witness was bound to appear, [unless notified that he wa-s not rea quire!. On that account, the conton , [tion of the defence that Constable j.Culotty was told by the Wellington , solicitor he would be notified if he j Were required was unsatisfactory. It .'appeared, however, that the constable I was in anj< case coming to Masterton _ on holiday at the t : mo to which his , claim referred. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £8 and costs.
