The Government Meteorologist (Dr. E. Kidson) reported at 4 p.m. yesterday:—General situation: An intense depression is now located eastward of New Zealand while a moderate anticyclone is centred near Melbourne; a tropical cyclone is centred near Suva. Winds, moderate to strong west to south-west winds backing to southerlies, gale force probable in places; seas (New Zealand waters), becoming rough ou the West Coast and south of Castlepoint; (Tasman Sea), strong southerlies and rather rough seas in the eastern Tasman .Sea; weather changeable and unsettled with showers at first mainly in western and southern parts of the South Island, but later mainly in-eastern and northern districts- cooler temperatures. Lighting-up time—7.47 p.m.
