THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1929. A SERIOUS MENACE.
The Masterton Borough Council no doubt will feci bound to give serious heod to the representations which are to bo made to it this evening on the subject of the fireblight meanee in the local district. Organised action clearly must be taken if any serious effort is to be made to cope with this destructive orchard disease and it only emphasises the need for action that remedial measures of limited scope seem likely to be of correspondingly limited effect. At the narrowest view, the -Borough Council should be prepared to interest itself in the question of doing what is possible to protect orchards in and about the town from the ravages of firebiight, but it should be prepared to co-operate also with those who aim at more comprehensive measures against this menace to fruit-grow-ing. There is every indication that in the near future the Dominion will have either to embark upon a really vigorous campaign against firebiight or decide to do without a fruit-growing industry.. This is a question of great concern to a district like the Wairarapa, where the extension of fruit-growing appears 1 to offer a promising means of building up the prosperity of the community in . town and country. The problem is essentially one which calls for co-opera-tion between town and country. There ‘ need be no question of imposing hard-' ship on the owners of hawthorn hedges or anyone else. It is a matter simply ’ of getting together and deciding what , in the circumstances it is best to do or ’ leave undone in the interests of all concerned. ,
