LOCAL ELECTIONS.

ACTION BY FARMERS’ UNION CRITICISED. MR. C. C. JACKSON’S REPLY. At its meeting yesterday, the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Fann- I ers’ Union had 'before it a letter from ’ Air. I. D. Cameron, chairman of the , Mauriceville School Committee, pro- . testing against the action of the Mastertoil branch in asking members to vote for a particular candidate for the Wellington Education Board. Mr. Cameron explained that he was casting no reflection on the candidate sefected, but thought that the Union should not take political action. The chairman (Mr. C. C. Jackson) ‘ said he must accept responsibility for the action taken by the Masterton ’ branch in reference to the Education Board election. He was rather sur- i prised at Mr. Cameron’s protest because as a matter of fact there was no reason why the Farmers’ Union should not take just as much interest in the election of a member of the Education Board as it did in Harbour Board, elections. There was no reason that he ; could see why they should not interest' themselves in all local elections and he thought they were within their rights in supporting the election of a representative of the country districts. When the Masterton branch took action regarding the Education Board election there were only two candidates in the | field, one from the town of Masterton, I and one from Kopuaranga. It was with the idea, of getting a country represent- > ative for a country district on the Edu- ! cation Board that he too'k the step he ' did. Mr. Cameron’s letter was quite ; courteous but it was based o/i a wrong ‘ conception of the duties of their organ- i isation. The organfeation was in a I position to exercise a very powerful influence and to get results, and personally, said Mr. Jackson, he would have no hesitation on any future occasion in taking up the same attitude as in the case of the Education Board election. —

No detailed motion was- passed, but the secretary was instructed to reply to iMr. Cameron explaining the attitude of the Union.
