THE POLITICIANS PAY.
AN INCREASE ADVOCATED (By Telegraph—“ The Age” Special.) WELLINGTON, August 14. Last session a committee of members appointed their representatives to place before the Prime Minister a proposal that the honorarium ffe increased. Nothing had been heard of the matter this session till Mr. J. G. Eliott (Oroua) mentioned in the House tonight that he was one of the delegates who discussed it with Mr. Coates and he wished to state that members still recognised generally that their honorarium was inadequate. (Hear, hear.) This particularly applied to married men, who during the session were obliged to keep two homes going. Possibly. being election year, many would not be inclined to speak of salary increases but he thought that the Government could legislate this session, making a substantial increase from January 1 and in the meantime there would be a general election and electorate* could applaud or condemn. Mr. G. R. Sykes (Masterton): “They will all take- it.”
Mr. Eliott: u Yes, tho thing is they might not support it on the platform.”
