LOSS BY FIRE.

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED NEAR WAIMATE ' OCCUPANTS ESCAPE IN NIGHT ATTIRE WAIMATE, August 14. Fire completely destroyed “Tewaimatea,” the twenty-five roomed homestead of E. C. Studholme, near Waimate, this morning. Awakened at 4.30 by the glow of the flames at her upstairs window, Miss Wood, the governess, had just time to waken the child’ren and maids, who all escaped in night attire. The wooden building, portion of which was very old, being built in 1860 by the late Mr. Michael Studholme, thq first white settler, burned fiercely and nothing at all was saved. The origin of the outbreak is a mystery as no fires were lit in the house on the previous day. The insurances on the house and’ furniture totals £6OOO. Mr !and Mrs Studholme were in Christchurch at the time of the fire.—(P.A.)
