PEACE OVERTURE.

AUSTRALIAN MARINE COOKS AND SHIPOWNERS. NEW’ CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. NON-UNION LABOUR. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, May 23. The Shipowners’ Association has received a telegram from Mr. Tudehopo in Sydney requesting a conference to discuss a settlement of the cooks’ dispute and declaring that the Trades Unions’ Council had no authority to act for the cooks. On behalf of the shipowners, the secretary, Mr. Elf ord, replied: “We will meet your representatives, with or without representatives of other bodies to discuss a settlement. We have already informed you on two occasions of the terms on which we are prepared to re-engage your members. These terms take nothing away from you to which you were previously entitled, but after the ships of all members of my organisation are fully maimed, if there is any difficulty in regard to details, we are prepared to give consideration to any representations you may make.” A meeting of tho combined committee of the Maritime Unions and Trades Union Council passed a resolution to resist to the utmost any attempt by the employers to engage non-union labour for the ships, and also to resist the abolition of the roster system which for years had been a condition of employment as well as a clause in the Cooks' Union rules, and that before tho owners got their way in this matter, the Arbitration Court should he consulted. —(P.A.) ORGANISATIONS AT ODDS. (Received Wednesday, 8 p.m) MELBOURNE, May 23. When the conference of the Australian Council of Trades Union and Maritime Unions meet to-morrow, certain union officials will demand that the council either definitely remains in charge of tho marine cooks’ dispute, with or without Mr Tudehope’s authority, or retire from the dispute altogether. It is now recognised that the Australasian Council of Trades Unions is ou its trial and if it fails to insist upon its authority to conduct the dispute, it will have been dealt a blow from which it will hardly recover.— (P.A.) ANOTHER SHIP TIED UP. (Received Wednesday, 8 p.m ) SYDNEY, May 23. . e crew of the Melbourne Steamship Company’s steamer Dimboola have been paid off and the vessel tied up., lhe crew will be conveyed by rail back ho the ports at which they signed on.
