SUPREME COURT.
NEW JUDGE APPOINTED MB. D. S. SMITH It was announced yesterday by the Attorney-General (the Hon. F. J. Rolloston) that Mr David Stanley Smith, of the legal firm of Morrison, Smith, and Morrison, of Wellington, has been offered, and has accepted the position of the vacant Supreme Court Judgeship. Mr Smith will take up his duties on May 1. Mr Justice Smith was born in Dunedin in 1888, his father being the Rev. J. Gibson Smith, a well-known resident of Wellington for many years past. He was educated at Wellington College and at Victoria University - College, graduating LL.M, in 1913. While “at the university he took a prominent part in the affairs of the Debating Society, and was the Plunket medalist for debating in 1909. Ho set up in practice as a barrister and solicitor and notary public after completing his legal studies, and for some years he has been the senior member of the firm of Morrison, Smith, and Morrison. He has acted as examiner in law to tho New Zealand University, and also in tho same capacity in. connection with the Diploma of Accountancy awl Banking. After serving with tho Wellington Infantry Regiment abroad in 1917-18, ho returned to take an active interest in tho administration of the returned soldiers’ organisation, being vice-presi-dent of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association and chairman of the executive between 1920 and 1924 during the busiest period of tho association’s affairs. Amongst other activities, he was a member of the oxecuof tho New Zealand Alliance in an<l ho is now President of the Wellington Rotary Club. On tho field of sport he represented Victoria College at the university tennis tournaments, between 1907 and 1911 and in athletics from 1908 to 1910.
