PETROL PRICES
NEW TAX AND ADDDITION. VARIOUS ESTIMATES STATEMENT BY MR COATES. (By Telegraph—“ The Age’’ Special). WELLINGTON, November 9. Various estimates were made by members during a debate on the Petrol Tax BUI (a summary of which appears on page 3) as to what the consumer will pay as a result of the oil companies having to meet a Customs duty of 4d a gallon on importations. The Prime Minister ridiculed the view that the result would be a rise of fivepence a gaUon. He knew, ho said, that there must be an addition to the fourpenee, but to talk of fivepence was ridiculous. “It is no use trying to make huge profits from it,’’ added Mr Coates. “Every man is entitled to his profit, but to talk of a penny is ridiculous. It might be a farthing.” The Prime Minister mentioned that an arrangement had been, made for petrol to ba stored in bond. Thus the duty is only payable when the petrol goes into consumption.
