ARRESTED IN ERROR.

SEARCH FOR PRISON ESCAPEE. CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. Early last evening tho Lyttelton police received information that a man answering to the description of the missing prisoner, Raymond Whitting, had been seen on a road at Rapaki. Constables McKenzie and Anderson met the suspect on the load carrying a “swag.” He offered no objection to accompanying the constables to the police station, whore he submitted to a thorough examiniation in a remarkably complacent manner. He stated that he was destitute. It was found that, while the suspect tallied in many respects with the description of tho missing man, particularly in the matter of height and colour, ho was undoubtedly older. Ho did not have a broken nose as does the escapee. Having satisfied themselves that tho man was not Whitting the police released him and accommodation was found for him for the night.—(P.A.l
