LIMITING ARMAMENTS.

DIVERGENCIES AT GENEVA. POWERS AT ODDS. (Received Thursday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 21. The British United Press Geneva correspondent, summing up the disarmament position, says that the Preparatory Disarmament Commission, which resumes its sittings to-day, is faced with the following problem: Britain is determined if possible to secure a draft convention for the purpose of demonstrating the success of the League’s efforts. France, however, considers that the fundamental divergencies are so great that it is useless to continue the present effort. Italy, while professing to be in favour of disarmament, makes so many reservations on basic points that unanimity seems hopeless. Finally, Germany insists that sfie would never accept a draft which merely provides for the stabilisation of armaments instead of serious disarmament. —(A. and N.Z.)
