At a meeting of the Park Tennis Club on Wednesday evening, it was decided to hold a social and dance on May 11, when the trophies won during the year will also be presented. At the Masterton Optimists’ Club’s second luncheon yesterday it was reported that the fourth club in the Dominion had been formed this week at Auckland. Members of the Masterton Golf Club will play a medal round on the Lansdowne links to-morrow. Players are requested to arrange their own partners. A Whareama resident stated, yesterday that recently a large party was observed 4 4 down, the river playing merrily at the ducks 'during the absence of the owner of the property.” A typograpical error occurred in the report of the Masterton Harrier Club yesterday morning. The postponed date of the official opening of the club should have read April 30, not May 30. Mr George Shaw, Te Ore Ore, has presented a very fine Romney fleece to the wool-classing class of the Masterton Technical School. The fleece is remarkable for its evenness, density and length of wool, and is d model of its kind.

The second luncheon of the Masterton Optimists’ Club was held yesterday and judging by the enthusiasm displayed, the spirit of the movement has taken on. Greetings were received from the Wanganui,, Christchurch and Auckland clubs, the latter being the latest club formed.

While proceeding to Solway camp on Wednesday, a Territorial named Roger Wilton, of Martinborcfiigh, was thrown from his mount and sustained a frac.ured collarbone. The horse bolted when leaving Martinborough, and the rider was found by Mr J. McLeod lying on the grass alongside the road near the Ruamahunga Bridge. At a meeting of representatives of clubs and others interested, in athletic sport in Martinborough this week, Mr W. B. Martin, chairman of the Town Board presiding, it was resolved that the racecourse trustees be asked to purchase the playing area under offer, and that a control board consisting of two representatives of each club, besides Mr W. B. Martin be appointed. A practical example of appreciation of the efforts of the Mount Holdsworth Club is afforded by a letter received by the secretary of the Club (My F. Norris) from a party of four Wellington residents who visited Mount Holdsworth at Easter. Each member of the party has joined the club, and forwarded their subscriptions of 2s and 6d each. A very pleasant social gathering took place in the Trades’ Hall last evening when the friends of Miss Eiva Magrath entertained her at a kitchen evening in honour of her approaching marriage. Besides a large attendance of Masterton well-wishers, visitors were present form Carterton and Greytown, testifying to the widespread popularity of the guest of the evening. Dancing and vocal items comprised the evening’s amusement and the organisers of the gathering provided supper. At a meeting of Masterton residents last evening to consider the improvement of Castlepoint, Mr H. H. Boddington offered to donate fifty Finns Insignus trees for planting at Castlepoint. Mr Young, on behalf of Messrs Fly and Young, sated that his firm would convey the trees there free of cost. Mr Boddington added that he was prepared to. be one of a working party to proceed to Castlepoint on the King’s Birthday to clean up the cemetery. At Auckland yesterday, John Buckley, a builder, aged 46, was fined £lO, and/his license was cancelled for a year for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car. A constable said he saw Buckley outside the Panmure Hotel on Wednesday afternoon. He was staggering about and went over to his car, trying to crank it. He was so drunk that he could hardly stand. The Magistrate (Mr. Hunt) in imposing a penalty, said it was fortun ate for the accused that he was not driving the car.— (P-A.)
