TO-MORROW’S CARNIVAL.
AN ARRAY OF CHAMPIONS. OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC ATTRACTIONS. Many notable competitors will be taking part in the athletic events at Masterton to-morrow on the occasion of the carnival of the Masterton Fire Brigade and Municipal Band. In addition to Masterton’s two champions, Rose and T. Oakley, a team of ’Wellington cracks will compete. These will include J. Fleming, the fastest 440 yard runner in New Zealand since the war, and the present New Zealand champion; C. Jenkins, Wellington provincial champion; C. Campbell, the best half-mile runner in New Zealand (two years ago on a Masterton track he did 880 yards in Imin 59secs); C. B. Allan, the present 880 yard New Zealand ’Varsity and Wellington Provincial champion; D. Priestly, the ’Varsity one mile champion, who two years ago was defeated by 2 feet in Wellington in the race for the Wellington Provincial mile championship; and E. G. Sutherland, the best all round field event man at the present time. He returned from South Africa last year, where he was the holder of several championships. He was the first New Zealander to clear 6ft in the high jump and subsequently, in South Africa, he cleared 6ft lin. Tho «ream of Wellington lady athletes, including Miss Manton the present New Zealand champion, is also competing. With such an array of outside champions, in addition to the pick of the local athletes, the meeting to take place to-morrow should prove one of the star attractions of the season in the athletic world.
