BRITISH POPULATION.

EIGHTY PER CENT. LIVING IN TOWNS. DISPARITY OF THE SEXES. LONDON, April 18. A general report of the Census of 1921, just issued, shows the population of England and Wales to be 37,750,000, an average of 649 persons to the square mile, the densest of any country in the world for which statistics were available. Eighty per cent of the people live in towns; 40 per cent, in ferty-six towns of upwards of 100,000 inhabitants. The effect of the war is shown in the increased disparity of the sexes. Surplus women are 1,700,000 compared with 1,200,000 in 1911.— (P.A)
