A TOTAL LOSS.

FIRE AT PAPATOETOE. SHOP AND BILLIARDS SALOON DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, April 19. Fire broke out early this morning in a block of buildings in Shirley Road, Papatoetoe, and completely destroyed a hairdresser’s shop and billiards saloon. The building, which was owned by Messrs Burside Bros., was a large wooden one which burned very rapidly and was soon reduced to ashes. There was no fire brigade to cope with the fire and a bucket brigade could not subdue the flames. A brick wall, two feet thick, separated the burning building from stables adjoining in which was stored £2OOO worth of contracting material. The hairdressing shop was rented by R Nielson, and W. Tucker kept the billiards saloon. There was nobody in the building at the dime of the fire and its cause is unknown. The insurance on the building is not known.—(P.A) OUTBREAK AT DUNEDIN. SEED MERCHANT’S PLANT DAMAGED. DUNEDIN, April 19. The fire brigade was .called out this afternoon to the premises of Nimmo and Blair, seed merchants, in Willis Street, where a lire had been caused by an overheated bearing. The flames spread from one of the seed to a wooden smut chute and travelled about ten feet along it to the dust house. An intense draught fanned the blaze in the dust house. The roof was red hot and the firemen found access difficult. The grass seed plant was considerably damaged. The property was insured.—(P.A.)
