ROSE WINS MILE HANDICAP.

HASTINGS, March 5.

One of the largest gatherings held in Hastings assembled at the Royal sports meeting at Nelson Park in connection with the Royal visit. Competitors came from Wanganui, Masterton, Wellington, Marton, Dannevirke and the neighbouring districts. Rose won the mile handicap from scratch in 4tnin. 23 4-5 see. He shepherded the field to the last lap, where be got into a handy position, and drawing out in the run home, won comfortably. Oakley (Masterton) 15 yards behind, won the mile cycle race in 2min. 18 4-ssee., and the two miles from 30 yards behind in smin. 52 1-5 sec. C. J. Robertson (Hastings) won the 220 yards handicap, and the 880 yards was won by H. J. Skenna (Dannevirke). Verry (Hastings) was second. Newton (Wanganui) was just beaten for third pace by Campbell, of Hastings. The time was 2min. 0 1-5 sec. —(P.A.)
