IN RADIO BROADCASTING. THE AUCKLAND STATION. OPENED ON SATURDAY EVENING Itie new broadcasting station at Auckland, the first ef a series «f powerful stations to be established in the Dominion, was officiary opened, by the Postmaster General on Saturday evening. Messages were picked up at Sydney and at other points In the Pacific. The items sent out were heard clearly tn Maateriron. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August B.—A new era in wireless broadcasting in New Zealand commenced at Auckland on Saturday night, when IY.A., the first of the big broadcasting stations being erected throughout the Dominion by the Radio Broadcasting Company, was opened and achieved such success that the Dominion may now justly claim an important place on the radio map of the world. A special programme was given, and during the evening messages were received from listeners-in as far south as Dunedin and from Rarotonga, Suva and Sydney. There was a large attendance at the opening function,, which was performed by the Hon. W. Nosworthy, Post-master-General. Mr. Nosworthy defended the Government’s policy with regard to the fees charged to listenersHe said he heped the Christchurch plant would be in operation within a few weeks. He emphasised the fact that the greater the number of licenses issue#, the better would be the service the. company wolild be able to- provide with the increased funds at its disposal.—(P.A.) Broadcasting from the new Auckland station was heard very clearly by Masterton listeners-in on Saturday night. The chairman of the- company announced that the items had been picked up in Sydney; Last evening, a sacred concert was given.
