BOUTS IN AUSTRALIA. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.). SYDNEY, August 7—At the Stadium, Joe Esler knocked out Gonsalves in the seventeenth round of a heavy-slogging match. Earlier rounds were tame, but in the later rounds, Edwards severely handled his opponent repeatedly flooring him.— (P.A.). NEW ZEALAND EVENTS. NEW PLYMOUTH, August B.—Dick Elmour (Fance) defeated Al. McDonald (Queensland) on points in a singularly uninteresting bout of fifteen rounds, in whieh neither boxer showed any inclination to fight solidly.—(P.A.) BLENHEIM, August B.—The fifteen rounds professional fight between Tom Griffiths (Dunedin), Bst and George Curran (Wellington), B.llJlbs, went the full distance. It was a clean clever exhibition of fast fighting. The men were evenly matched and the referee’s decision of a draw was very well received although many were of opinion that Griffiths just shaded his opponent. The announcement of a draw was cheered by a large audience. In a preliminary amateur four-rounds, Angus Smith C.Hh’tihi’im) 9st 31b, got the decision over S. Thomas Bst 13Jlbs 1 after a sieve, bout.—(P.A.).
