S.M. COURT.
BY-LAW AND OTHER CASES. A lengthy list of cases, most of which were, of a minor character, was heard by Mr A. M. Mowlem S.M. at the Masterton Magistrate's Court yesterday. Djivid McNally, charged with being found drunk in Chapel Street on Thursday evening was fined 10s. Joseph Bentley, Charged with driving a motor cycle Without being the holder of a motor driver’s license, was lined £2 and 7s costs. Sergeant Dyer said that defendant had told the constable an untruth, by saying that ho had a license at Dannevirke, whereas he did not take out a license until some ; time after he was interviewed by the Masterton constable. John A lick Betts, for using a motor • car without having the proper register- ; ed number plates thereon, was fined £2 1 and 7s costs. Sergeant Dyer said that defendant had been running a new Dodge car for some time with the old plates taken from a King car. Defendant, in a statement to the police', said that someone in the Wellington garage ] where he got the Dodge had changed , the number plates, and he had been ( unaware that he was running the car with the old number plates until he went to the Masterton Post Office to register the Dodge. | Percy Ramsay, Hilda Wall and John Cairns, 'for failing to produce motor j drivers' licenses, were each fined 5/ ■ and 7/ costs. Harry Bert Reed, for riding a bicycle on a footpath, was fined 10/ and 7/ costs.
James May, for driving a horse and cart without lights, was fined 10/ and 7/ costs. A. McLeod and William Wtlsh were each fined 5/ and 7/ costs for allowing stock to stray on borough streets. Bernard George Lee, for failing to apply for registration for service under the Defence Act, was fined £2 and 7/ costs. The Sdrgeant-Major representing the Defence Office said that Lee had evaded cadet training for two and a-half years. William Henry Lee, for failing to attend Territorial drill, was convicted and discharged. The Defence officer said that Lee had only •missed one drill, and was usually a good lad at his drills.
John James Sutherland and Charles J. McLean, for failing to attend drill were fined 10/ and 20/ respectively and 7/ costs. Nathaniel 'Brown, for having in his possession an unregistered firearm, was fined 5/ and costs 7/, the Magistrate treating the offence as a purely technical breach.
Henry Drake was proceeded against by Mrs Drake for being £6 in arrears upon a maintenance order. Mr. Pragnell appeared for complainant, and Mr J. Macfarlane Laing for defendant. M Laing said the arrears were admitted, but defendant was unable to pay. Defendant, in evidence, said that he had been ill, and was still under the doctor's care. He had no money and could not pay. Mr Laing said that an application w r as to be made for a variation of the maintenance order. His Worship said there would be no order made, as defendant had proved his inability to pay.
