VISITING THE EXHIBITION.

HOW SCHOOL TRIPS ABE MANAGED. Mr D. A. Strachan, senior inspector of schools for Southland, who is at present visiting Wellington, gave some interesting particulars concerning the’ proposed transport of school children to the Exhibition in Dunedin.

The cost of transport on the railway, explained Mr Strachan, is 6/6 for the first 100 miles and 4d for each five miles thereafter, with 18/ the cost of steam ferry ticket. These are return rates. Each, child will be kept for three days for 6/ per day. Bedding, three meals, and a light supper are included. A free city trip will also be given, and admission to the Exhibition will be free. A man will be placed at the head of each boys’ room, and a woman at the head of each girls’ room at the places' where the children will be lodged. There will be a visit 'from the doctor daily. «

It is suggested that local funds should be raised to meet if possible jhalf the cost of transport. It is proposed to limit the children conveyed to those in (Standards IV, V, and VI, and it is considered that these are the most likely to receive educational benefit from the trip. The Education Department has intimated that the time spent on the trip may be considered school time.
