THE RUMANIAN HEIR.

WISHES TO RE MARRY. SEEKING DIVORCE FROM SECOND WIFE. (Received Sunday 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2.—The “Daily Express” Bucharest correspondent states that Prince Charles, who renounced his succession to the throne of Rumania, is believed to be in Venice. One reason advanced for his renunciation is that he wishes to remarry. For this reason he seeks divorce from his present wife, but this he would be unable to. do while he remained heir to the throne. The Prince in a letter to the King undertakes not to return to Rumania for six years. It is generally supposed that the Prince is anxious to remarry Zizt Lambrino, daughter of a Rumanian general, to whom he is greatly attached.—(A. and N.Z.) ANOTHER VIEW. ACTION DUE TO POLITICAL DIFFERENCES. (Received Sunday 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2.—The “Daily Telegraph” correspondent states that a well-informed diplomatic quarter asserts that the action is not so closely associated with the morganatic marriage as is popularly supposed. He gathers that it was more immediately determined, or at any rate precipitated by events of a political and administrative character. Recently the question of equipping the Rumanian air force with new aeroplanes was under consideration. Certain departments were intent on purchasing machines from a certain power. The Prince, being the titular head of the service disagreed. He eventually imposed his will and accordingly the machines were ordered from another country. It appears that the choice was dogged by misfortune. One of the pilots was killed during the tests, while other machihes proved to contain unsuitable engines. The thwarted authorities sought to make capital of the incidents urging an official inquiry. The Prince strongly opposed, but Cabinet overruled the objection and ordered the inquiry. These circumstances contributed in no small degree to the Prince’s resignation of Air Commander in Chief, together with th eßoyal prerogatives. The engagement of Prince Charles Carol and Princess Helene of Greece, his present wife, took place at Lucerne in November 1918. The “Daily Chronicle” correspondent, who was at Lucerne at the time, says the couple appeared happy lovers, and it was difficult for those who saw them to believe that the renunciation is associated with matrimonial differences. —(A. and N.Z.) ALLEGED IRREGULAR PRACTICE. REVELATIONS EXPECTED. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, Jan. 2.—The resignation of Herr Madareseo, the Rumanian War Minister, is announced. He has been publicly accused of ir legularities in dealing with the Dutch Fokker aeroplane concern. Prince Carol’s name is coupled with his. Parliament has been summoned for Monday and revelations are expected. —{A. and N.Z.) PRINCE’S DEFINITE REFUSAL. POSSIBLE PRETENDER e MENTIONED. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) BUCHAREST, Jan. 2.—Prince Carol should have returned here after a" tending the funeral of Queen Alexandra, but went to Switzerland, from where he wrote the King renouncing and declining to return. The Crown Council met on Friday an u discussed the question of the regency in the event of the King’s death, and also Carol’s interference against th. Government in political affairs. Minister-Hiott, who went to Swit zerland in order to induce the Prince to change his mind, has returned with a definite written renunciation. It. is feared that complications will arise later from the possible pretender to the Throne, namely, the prince’s so i by Zizi, also named Carpi.—(A. an ’ N.Z.)
