SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age’’ Special.) Fire Brigade Bail. The annual ball of the Carterton Volunteer Fire' Brigade was held on Monday evening and was well attended. The interior of the hall was nicely decorated. Extras were played by Misses M. Bond, M. McPhee, M. Stevens and Messrs W. Parker and C.-K. Goodin. A ladies’ committee provided an excellent supper, and Messrs D. Moncrieff, D. Wilde, A. Wallis, B. Whitburn and W. Boston were M’s.C. School Re-opened.
The Hinakura school, which was closed for some weeks owing to the diphtheria outbreak, was re-opened on -Monday. Oddfellowship. A branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (N.Z.) is to be established in Martinbarough, and a committee of 15 members has been set up to further the movement. Opossum Season. Trappers of opossums in the South Wairarapa report that the .'Season has been much below the average due to the excessive wet weather. The skins are now being forwarded to the market. At the first sale at Dunedin the prices ranged from 18/ down to 6/ per skin. Miniature Rifles.
A team to represent the Greytown Miniature Rifle Club in their match at Featherston to-morrow evening against the local club will be selected from the following.—Mrs Tilson, R. Tilson, A. Morris, Miss J. Morris, A. H. Bull, F. Bull, C. G: Bouzaid, P. J. Nicholls, W. Tully, T. Orr, Miss D. Roband, and H. Bull. Personal. Miss Wilson, of the Cross Creek school, has accepted an appointment at the Kilbirnie SchooL A London' correspondent states that Mr and Mrs Charles Cormack, ef Eskdale, who have been in the South of France and Italy, spent a few days in London before leaving for Bristol and Tauntom Miss D. Till, of Featherston, is at present an inmate of the South Wairarapa Hospital where she underwent an operation for appendicitis. Owing to indisposition, the Mayor (Mr W. Fisher) was unable to attend the meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last night. Bankrupt Confectioner. At a meeting of creditors in Wellington, in the bankrupt estate of Peter Nichols Branigan, the Official Assignee stated that it looked as though the estate would pay 20/ in the £. According to bankrupt’s counsel, the unsecured creditors totalled £lOO7 2/3, and to secured creditors £2OOO. The total liabilities were £3007 2/3, and the value of the real estate £4600. The surplus assets over liabilities was estimated at £lB3B 8/9. Bankrupt said he carried on business at Featherston until 1919, when he made a verbal agreement with his brother, W. Branigan, that he should build for bankrupt a shop and dwelling opposite the bathing sheds at Evans Bay. When completed the building cost £lOOO more than anticipated. In June last bankrupts’ brother succeeded on a claim for £619, and bankrupt had no alternative but to file in order to protect himself and other creditors. The meeting decided that the Official Assignee realise on the stock immediately, and the properties at a time most likely to give the greatest benefit to the creditors. It was further decided to take steps to prevent • the sale through the Registrar of the Supreme Court of the property at Featherston.
