SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age” Special.) Obituary. The death occurred at Featherston on Wednesday evening of Mr J. Northey, a well known resident, aged 35. He had been ailing for some time. He was a member of the Borough Council, and took an interest in all sports. Mrs G. A. Vincent, (Featherston) is a sister. Not Available. The Wairarapa P. and A. Society were hoping that Professor Peren could give an address at Greytown at their ordinary meeting this month but owing to prior engagements he cannot do so. Main Highways. The Greytown Borough Council has been advised by the Main Highways Board, that in view of the fact that only tar and sand coating is to be put on the main highway through tho borough, plans and specifications in this case can be omitted. The mean cost of maintenance of the adjoining highway on the 1924-23 estimates is £2 1/ per chain, and the Board’s contribution will be one third of that amount. Drainage Plans. The Drainage Committee redommended to the Greytown Borough Council that a plan be prepared ot the high pressure main throughout the borough showing the position of the hydrants, stop valves, etc., and a similar plan showing the position of sewers, man holes, and inspection pits, also that the position of every fire sump be shown. A Request. The Health Department is requesting local authorities in South Wairarapa to adopt a system of refuse collection in the main centres. Carterton and Greytown have decided to adopt the idea. Re-Valuation. The Grieytown Borough is to be revalued within the next few weeks, it is hoped before the new rates are struck. The object is to change back from rating on the rental value to the capital value. Croquet. The Greytown Corquet Club entertained Mrs G. McCracken at a farewell afternoon, on the Memorial Park lawns. The competition winners were Mrs Hodge (Monte Carlo), Mrs Humphries (French), Mrs A. Haigh (golf), and Mrs Brunton (Peg.) The Club’s Tate rose bawl for 1924-25 was won by Mrs A. Gregor. Police Stations.
Superintendent Mcllveney, of the Police Force, was on a tour of inspection to the police stations i» the South Wairarapa yesterday. Now Factory.
The new dairy factory at Soutn Featherston, is now ready for occupation, and the change over from tho old factory will take place in a few days. The daily milk supply is about 8000 gallons, and the cheese manufactured totals 95 per day. No butter is being manufactured at present on account of the shifting of machinery. i Post. Offices.
Mr A. T. Markman, secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, has been visiting the South Wairarapa. He inspected the Greytown Post Office; for which improvements are desired.
Fire Brigade. The Featherston Volunteer Fire Brigade has reduced the number of active members from 20 to 17, including officers, which is believed to be sufficient for efficient working and likely to effect a saving in equipment.
