WAR ZONE SCANDAL
SEARCH FOR METAL SCRAP. MANY GHOULISH EPISODES. (Tress Association—Copyright.) Paris, Oct. 29. —A scandalous state of affairs has been revealed in the war zone. As a return to the agricultural use of the soil in battlefields, such as . that of the Chemin , des Dames and Garonne is impossible, the Government leased to contractors the right to searchi the battlefields for metal. The lessees are employing hundreds of workmen, of all nationalities, including Poles, Portuguese, Arabs, and Chinese, to seek for buried steel, iron, and copper. The seardi is revealing many skeletons of English, French, Italian and German bodies, which are carelessly flung aside after anything of value has been taken. The searchers are paid in accordance with the amount of metal they find. Two Arabs found several tons of ..shell cases, for which they received 10,000 francs. The Arabs spent all the money within a day in gambling cabarets. Revolver fighting and other assaults occur daily. The Government pays a premium of two francs for each body discovered, but this is too little to prevent ghouls looting the dead. A searching inquiry has been ordered, and already several arrests have been made.—(A. and N.Z.)
