RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE LOWER GRADES JUNIORS Mauriceville 9, Masterton 8. This match was mostly confined to the forwards. The score docs not show the strength of the teams, Masterton, (playing two men short),; was i unlucky not to win, scroing three tries to their opponents one, Mauriceville’s winning points being gained by a potted goal by Hood. For Masterton E. Grantham, Brown and R Gee scored tries. Claphan scored a try for Mauriceville which Hood converted, Hooa also petted a goal. Prior to the match the Masterton juniors elected L. Roff captain, and R. Allan, vice captain. THIRDS MASTEBTON 39 Bed Star 0. The Mastorton thirds had a run-a-way victory from the Star thirds. Although the ball was very greasy the blues handled it exceptionally well, snapping it off the ground in a manner which would be creditable even in a senior game. The Stars did not seem to be able to handle the ball at all, and tried to make it a forward game, but, although they could not mane much headway they stuck to it well. For Masterton tries were scored by JLoveday (2)., L. CoUinge, S. Jenkins., D. Pauling., H. Mackley., V Norman., K. Buick and M. Groube(2) Mackley. also kicked a penalty and converted three tries. Mr W ,Grantham refrerecd. FOURTHS Bed Star 8, High Schools. As a curtain raiser to the senior match the High School and Star fourths met on the oval. The Stars had the best of the game in both the back and forward divisions, but at times the school had them hard pressed. The first try scored for Stars was very neat. S. Cooper intercepted a pass, and, although he was tackled more than once he managed to shake the school defenders off and scored in the corner. Hayne also scored two tries and converted one. L. Williams emerged from a scramble with, the ball in his arms and scored the school’s only try. FIFTHS. Bed Star 10, High School A 0. The Stars were mostly on the attack during this-game but did not seem to have the finishing touches to be able to score. Both teams yere fit and gave a fair exhibition. Leach scored Star’s try which Croft converted. Croft also kicked a goal. Masterton v Technical School The majority of the Masterton fifths are primary school boys, who were visiting the navy at Wellington, and as Masterton could not find enough substitutes they -were forced to forfeit to the Technical School.
