MINEOWNER DUPED.
BY BOGUS BOOKIE. SEQUEL IN COURT. Auckland, Feb. 21.—Walter Vincent, aged 62, appeared at the Police Court on a charge that, on February 6, at Auckland, he did unlawfully obtain from Herbert Dod Norris the sum of £220 by representing that it was being invested with a bookmaker at Auckland on Savoury in the Ohawe Hurdles Handicap, and Uralla in the Nolan Cup at the Egmont meeting. Vincent pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence,; and was committed for trial. Norris, a mineowner, of Rhodesia, who arrived here on February’s, gave evidence that accused entered in the hotel smokeroom next morning and told him he was an assistant trainer and had had four wins out of nine starts. Witness gave a cheque for £2O on Savoury, and shortly afterwards accused said it had won. Subsequently he gave accused a cheque for £2OO and after a while accused left him.—(P.A.)
