A Wide Range. The Bengal Radio Club, listening in* heard snatches of a programme from Marconi House, London, and a concert broadcasted from Eiffel Tower, Paris, and also presistent Morse signals from Java. The possibility of direct wireless telephonic communication with London is arousing deep interest. Handsome Donation. The Rockefeller Foundation has given the Oxford University £75,000 to develop the department of biochemistry. i Sentenced to Death. An ex-policeman named Stagg was sentenced to death for the murder of the Altonville footballer named Ball. The jury recommended him to mercy. Motor Ships. The Bank of England will invite applications for £1,800,000 five per cent debenture stock, to be issued at £9B 10s per cent, in respect of which the Government will guarantee the principal and interest under the Trade Facilities Act. The proceeds are required to pay for a fleet of motor ships for £1,800,000, ordered from Harland and Wolff’s. Scottsdale Murder. The body of Mrs Downs, who disappeared from her home at Scottsdale, Tasmania, and whose husband has been charged with murder, was found in a bush. The police found a chaff bag containing portions of Mrs Downs’s body, comprising the head, shoulders and part of the trunk. A post mortem examination revealed that the feet and arms had been burnt and the remainder of the body charred. 'Olympic Fund. New South Wales’ quota of £4OOO to the Olympic Games fund is over subscribed. Defence an Alibi. The defence of Murray, charged with the murder of Berryman, the Melbourne suburban bank manager, is that he was not at the scene of the murder when Berryman was shot. Australian Tennis. Clemenger and Baker beat Anderson and Werthein 5/7,, . . 3/6, 6/4. Japanese Insurances. Whereas the former insurance proposals provided that the companies should pay 10 per cent of the claims, receiving the equipment in the form of a subsidy, it is at present understood that the Government is prepared to advance 180.000,000 yen to the companies in proportion to the percentage of claims. By this means the weaker companies will be greatly assisted. A Close Division. In the Bengal Legislature a motion for adjournment to express no-confid-ence in the Ministers, in view of their opposition to the release of political prisoners, was talked out. The Swara jist effort to enforce the closure was defeated by 64 votes to 63. Luxor Dispute. The Egyptian Government has cancelled Mr Howard Carter’s excavation license. On tho expiration of Lady Carnarvon ’s license in November the Director General of Antiquaries proceeds with the opening of the tomb and will take measures to safeguard and preserve antiquities. Foreign Matches Barred. N The French Chamber, by 355 votes to 215, rejected the Socialist amendment for cancelling article 36 of tho Government’s financial proposals, which provided for a State match monopoly.
