’VARSITY FOOTBALLERS.

DEFEATED IN SYDNEY. (Received 10.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 16.—A Metropolitan XV. defeated New Zealand University by 20 to 14 after an unexciting contest. Both teams lacked combination, though the Black forwards in the first half executed a number of fine dribbling rushes. The half-time score was 9 all. > McDonald scored a try for New Zealand, Diack converting, while Hopkins from the half-way boundary dropped a magnificient goal. The second spell slightly favoured Metropolitan, the New Zealand threequarters neutralising effective forward work by faulty handling. The bellringer by mistake rang the bell 20 minutes before time, the match ending abruptly. For New Zealand Murray scored, Diack converting.— (P.A.)
