SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) The Grey town Swimming Club wade a profit of £lO on its lecent carnival. The stationmaster at Greytown (Mr Lightfoot) is leaving for Auckland on his annual holiday. Mi Williams is acting as relieving stationmaster. About miles of the Kahutara stop-bank has been constructed by the contractor (Mr Gray.) A motor lorry belonging to a Masterton firm was destroyed by fire on the Lake Ferry road quite recently. There was a good attendance at the social tendered Mr and Mrs Ralph Stewart in the Crown Theatre, Greytown, on Wednesday evening by the United Football Club rnd it - supporters. Mr J. F. Thompson piesented the guests with a salad bowl and sdver cake-stand, suitably inscribed, as a token of the (steem in which they were held. Mr Thompson referred to the keen inter ’st MrStewart had evinced in all sports games, particularly football -and swimming. Mr Stewart was also a valued member of the Borough Council, and he would be greatly mi-sed in all circles. He wished the couple long life and happiness, being convinced they would prosper wherever they choose to make their future home. In returning thanks Mr Stewart said the tokens of appreciation amply rewarded him for and sacrifice he had made to further local matters. He was satisfied that next season Grey town would produce the senior champions in the football competition. He could not have taken such a prominent part in public matters had h : s wife not beer “ port’’ enough to carry on during his absence from business. Those assemblod sang “For they are Jolly Good Fellows.” At the Carterton Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr W. C. Deliar was charged by the Inspector of Factories with faihng to close his butcher’s shop on Christmas Eve and New Year’-- Eve. as provided for by the award. Defendant pleaded guilty, hut said he considered no harm was he : ng done by giving tßepublic facilities to get their meat for the holidays. A fine of £5 on each charge, with costs, was inflected.
“You are the brains of the establidiment,” said a solicitor to a female witness in the course of crossexamination at the Carterton Magistrates Court yesterday. The prompt retort was: “No, my husband the brains—husbands and wives* should have no secrets one from the other, and we try to live up to this.’’ A cricket team representing the Wellington Y.M.C.A., played a Carterton combination at Carterton on Wednesday, when the visitors won by one run. Tn The first innings the Y.M.C..-L made 69 runs (Fletcher 34. Milne 13) and in the second 44 (White 17, Price 10). Carterton comp led 42 in the first innings, there being no double figures l , and 79 in the second (Phillpotts 26, Whitburn 24).
At the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday a deal of evidence was taken in a share-milking case, in which Fred. A. C. Herrock (Mr Hart) claimed from Mary Ann Udy. (Mr J. T. Thompson) the sum of £25 15s 3d. amount unpaid on milk and calf veil-, and £66 2s 7d as damages for an alleged breach of contrast. His Worship reserved his decision.
Owing to the mass of business at the Carterton Magistrate's Court yesterday the Featherston sheenworrying case wa? further adjourned. Most of Now Zealand’ s crack marksmen are taking part in the AVa’rarapa Rifle Association’s meeting that opens at Panawai this morning.
