DISTRICT NEWS.

SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) The general committee of the V airarapa P. and A. Society will meet at Carterton on Saturday. A buyer secured 4000 fat sheep in the Lower Valley on Monday and just about cleaned the district out. Sltrewd dealers predict that prices will harden during the next couple of months, and that the rickety market •experienced of latp will assume some form of stability. Factory-cured icon and ham is being sold by growers in the Carterton district just now at lOd per lb retail. A full-sized billiard table has recently been installed at the boys' club in Greytown. Another addition about to be made to the appointments is a soft-drinks bar. The headmaster reported to the monthly meeting of the Carterton School Committee that the school roll now just under 400, with a secondary division of 67, and that increased accommodation was urgently needed. A meeting of the South Wairarapa School Committees’ Association io to be held at Greytown on March 23. At the annual meeting of the Carterton branch of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association the balance sheet showed a credit of £3 18s. Officers for the year were elected as follow: —Chairman, H. E. Jackson (re-elected); hon. secretary, H. M. Ewart; committee, M. F. King, A. M. Broadbent, H. J. McKenzie, J. C. Broad, G. Riggs, J. D. Hutchison, J. Johnston, R. Wakelin and J. z A. Cowles. It was decided to hold a parade on Anzac Day, and to hold the annual re-union on Saturday, April 29. It was resolved to invite the Mayor to co-operate with the Committee regarding the district’s quota of artificial poppies to be disposed of before Anzac Day. Some time ago the Ca rterton Schbol Committee asserted that the agitation for a side-school at th northern end of the town was hann ring its proposals for necessary additions to the main school. To show their fairness, the advocates of the side school permitted the committee to inform the Education Board that- it would be content, in the meantime, if increased accommodation wa s provided at the main school. The Board, however, appears to think that the side school is the most pressing requirement, and refuses to budge until particulars asked for regarding thi s proposal are supplied. There appears to be no valid reason why Carterton should not be granted both the increased accommodation and the side school, seeing there are indications that its population is likely to s how a rapid increase in the very near future. There are indications that matters are not running as smoothly as they might in the Liberal-Moderate Labour ranks of the Wairarapa electorate. - Last week Featherston residents took upon themselve s to announce the candidature of Mr J. W. Card, without consultin’/ other parts of the electorate. and this is the cause of the fly m the ointment. The usual custom is for committees to be appointed iu different parts of the district and for delegates from these to meet and decide who shall be the candidate. The antion of the Featherston Liberals is resented. The convener of the Featherston meeting is convening a meeting of Liberal-Moderate Labour supporters for Carterton thio evening. A somewhat sensational motor accident occurred opposite the Carterton Post Office at about 4.15 last evening, hut luckily ended with no serious results. When Mr A. H. Herbert, of Eketahuna, was nearing the town, on his way home from Wellington, he noticed a boy crossing the street. He tooted his horn and slowed down. Suddenly the boy, a son of Mr Hopkins, of Tyne street, doubled back, and bofryro he knew what was happening. Mr Herbert found the child under bis wheels. He immediately pulled up and took the boy to Nurse Strang’s hospital, whore he was medically examined and found to be sufferin’’ from bruises and shock.
