THE SOLDIERS’ SPORTS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, — On behalf of the- Sports Committee of the Wairarapa. Returned Soldiers’ Hostel I take the opportunity of sincerely thanking the 5232 people who came to the Solway Showgrounds to witness the tournament on Saturday last, and hope that any shortcomings > in the carrying out of the same, may be forgiven, as the tourney was more or less of an experimental nature, and at the same time it i s the more pleasing to think that many of those who came were actuated by the desire to give assistance in promoting the welfare of the Soldiers’ Club, a club that is made use of and is much appreciated by many hundreds of returned men, some thousand beds alone having been Booked during last year’s currency. It is the intention of the Sporte Committee to make the tourney an annual affair, and after the splendid response that has been given, in the first instance, there i s not the sligihtest doubt but that subsequent annual tourneys will prove an unqualified success, and let us hope may be for many a long year a happy reunion of soldier s and civilians alike. And in conclusion let me say that our Committee are delighted with the whole-hetairted and sporting assistance given by al] competitors, many of whom came from long distances, but with that true and great sporting instinct that so materially assisted in the verdict given by the public. It’s good for us—carry on. A. P. WHATMAN, President Soldiers’ Carnival.
