AEROPLANE ACCIDENT.

FALL IN A WHEATFIELD. THE PILOT INJURED. Christchurch, Dec. 30.—An Avro ■aeroplane owned by the Canterbury Aviation Company crashed about two miles from Motuna, between Cheviot and IVaikari, this morning. The pilot. Lieutenant H. C. Grout, formerly of the Royal Air Force, who was the only occupant, suffered a compound fracture of the knee and a dislocated hip. The machine crashed in a wheatfield, and when help arrived Grout was unconscious. He was taken to the Christohurch hospital. The aeroplane, which was fitted with a new Mono engine, was returning to Christchurch after having been used fo’’ exhibition flying at Blenheim and Seddon. The engine, which was lent by the Government, was absolutely new, having been fitted in the machine only recently. The cause of the accident has not yet been ascertained.— (P.A.)
