Sir Rupert and Lady Clarke, and Mr E. E. D. Clarke have arrived at Temuka from Australia, on their periodical fishing excursion.

Mr W. Thayer, barrister, of Honolulu, formerly secretary to th© Governor of Hawaii, arrived in Auckland by the Niagara. He is prominently connected with the Boy Scout movement in Honolulu. He will cross the Pacific by the Tahiti, due here about the end of January. Whilst at Hom© Mr Skerrett has been having a lot of good sport with the rifle in Scotland, having been among the grouse during on© of th© best Augusts for many years.

The death has occurred in England, of Mr Somerset D’Arcy Irvine, aged 65. H© was the second son of the latte Rev. Dr. G. M. D’Arcy Irvine, formerly of Hawkes Bay. Mr M’Arcy Irvin© lived In Auckland for some years, and was on the staff of the Government Life Insurance Department. Subsequently he was appointed manager and inspector in London for the Equitable Life Assurance Association of the United States.

Mr William Teihoka Parata, aged 41, who was born at Puketeraki,. and educated there and at Te Aute, has been approoched by a number of Natives of the Southern Maori electorate and has agreed to be a candidate at th© by-election. Mr Parata was two years in the Railway Department, nine years in the Tax, Valuation, and Advances Department, and resigned on account of his health. He has resided in Rotorua since 1909, first as a farmer, then as a motor car proprietor.
