SOME FAST TIMES. WELLINGTON LEADING FOR SHIELD. Christchurch, Dee. 9.—Th© New Zealand amateur athletic championships meeting opened to-day, in dull weather. No records were broken, but several standards were gained. Already Wellington are well ahead for the championship shield, with 34 points, Auckland and Canterbury each having secured 10 and Otago 2. For the Queensland Jubilee Commemoration Shield for most points in records and standards, Wellington have two points and Canterbury and Auckland one each. The results of the championship events so far as they have gone are as follow:— 220 Yards.—First Heat—W. J. Perry (Auckland) 1, L. A. Tracey (Wellington) 2. Time, 23 4-5. Second heat —H. E. Wilson (Wellington) 1, A. D. McLeod (Canterbury) 2. Time 24.

High Jump.—E. J. Sutherland (Wellington) 1, W. H. B. Buckhurst (Canterbury) 2. Height, 5 feet 8 inches. Both secured the standard. Three-Mile Walk.— J. McKenziq (Wellington) 1, F. C. Hickling (Wellington) 2. Won by 25 yards. Time 23.13 4-5.
