SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) The school sports at Carterton yes terday were the most representative yet Held and provided striking evi dnce of\a commendable desire to cul tivate iiN. unison the mind and the physique. That the education author ities approve of these athletic gather ings is found in the fact that al those schools which had pupils com peting were granted a full holiday for the event. The only thing to com plain at was the sparse attendance ol adults. Those who controlled the gathering are deserving of the highest praise and encouragement. The sultry weather experienced ol late has been lavourable to blights and other pests of cereals. At the meeting of the Carterton branch of the W.C.T.U. it was shown that the branch opened with a membership of 65, which had increased tc 105. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow : —President, Mrs Every; treasurer, Mrs Anderson; corresponding secretary, Mrs Knutson ; recording secretary, Mrs Knutson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Wilson, Welch, Peryman and Misses Young and Moncrieff. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring president, Mrs Peryman. While engaged lopping trees on Thursday evening, Mr T. Catt, of Carterton, had the misfortune to cut open a knee with the sharp instrument he was using. The wound required surgical attention. Sister May, of Masterton, is to take the Sunday School anniversary services at the Carterton Methodist Church on Sunday. The Carterton Swimming Club opened its weekly sports programme on Thursday evening. The -50yds race was won by H. M. Ewart, with L. Fairbrother second. Harry Hughan was first in the diving and M. King second. Mr E. Eagle, of Kent street, Carterton, has been coni..ied to his room tor several days.
