SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (Our Travelling Reporter.) Methodist workers conducted a "Rose Day" at Carterton on Saturday, the linuncial results being extremely satisfactory. One enterprising settler found her way lo the bowling green, and "hit" a few of the Master ton visitors. Twelve high-class Lincoln rums were dispatched on Saturday from the Wairarapa, en route for Argentina, where the market is to 'be tested. Practically all the rams were prizetakers this season, and are from the flocks of Messrs Wm. Perry (6), Bland Uayner (2), W. Rayner (2), and W. Howard Booth (2)— Now Zealand's best breeders. The rams should prove a splendid advertisement for this Dominion, and the Wairarapa breeders are to be commended for their enterprise, seeing that the cost to place each in the selling ring will be approximately twenty guineas. The South Wairarapa Trotting Club
is applying for a two days-' meeting. The Mastcrton Bowling Club secured victory by a narrow margin against Carterton on Saturday, the game to* wards the final taking a sensational "turn in favour of the visitors. With five heads to go, Dykes (Carterton) had a lead of ten on Pragnoll. At the finish Pragnell was two ahead of Dykes. Baskiville was always in tho lead with "Captain" Perry, and secured a handsome win. At the after-
noon tea adjournment Kerr and Harp "were eleven each on the eleventh head. Harp's team afterwards went to pieces, and Kerr piled on a score. The result of the game depended upon the last bead. Kerr securing a very fine two with Ins last bowl. It was a close call for Mastcrton. The following have been elected officers of the South Wyirarapa Trotting Club:—President, Mr. J. 'F. Thompson; vice-presidents, Sir Waller Buchanan, Messrs H. Morison, W. A. Grace. H. Adamsoii, H. Humphries, J. (' if&ect, A. L. Webster, F. J. White, A. Donald, J. Meikle, A. D. McLcod, M.P.; judge, Mr. J. F. Thompson; clerk-of scales, Mr. H. Walden; starter. Mr. J. H. Tompkins; assistant starter, Mr. W. Gates; handieapper, Mr. F. C. Thomas; treasurer, Mr. 'W. A. Bieknell; clerk of course, Mr. T. C. tidy; auditor, Mr. J .Cross; timekeepers, Messrs A. Coe, J. Cross, and T. Benton; judicial committee, Messrs J. F. Thompson, C. Beard, and A. L. Webster; stewards, Messrs Beard (chafrnian), A, McPhee, Raison, Poison, Bieluiell, Jock, P. Jewell, J. Cross, and W. Gates. Last year there was a distinct .fall-
ing off in the gate receipts and totalisator returns at the South Wairarapa Trotting Club's annual meeting, attributable to many agencies, but chiefly to the fact that the meeting was.conducted on a racecourse far removed from the railway and centre of population. Tauherenikau is a very pretty course, but expensive to reach. If the meeting was held on the TaratahiCarterton course there is nothing more certain than that the gate receipts and totalisator returns would double themselves. At anyrate, there is no reason why the officials should not apply the test. Mr. W. Henry Booth, of "Middle .Run," has returned after a visit to the Waikato district, where he inspected a number of Jersey herds, which breed he is keenly interested in. At a meeting of stewards of the tyaratahi-Carterton Racing Club, held on Saturday, a committee was set np to bring down a report to next meeting on improvements to tho totalisator house and other appointments. The Club has been advised that the Racing Commission will visit the district about the middle of January. It was decided that, to suit polo players, the monthly meetings be held at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m.
Visitors are expected from Grey town and Masterton at the installation ceremony at the Carterton Druids' Lodge this evening. Sunday school anniversary services were conducted at the Carterton Methodist Church yesterday, and were well attended. A feature of the services was the singing by scholars and the choir. The Carterton Bowling Club will not be represented at the Dominion tournament in January, the first miss recorded over a period of years. The Featherston County Council will hold its monthly meeting- on Friday of this week. A large attendance is expected at the social and dance to be held at Clarevillc to-morrow night in aid of the baby carnival competition. The committee promises a good floor, well timed music, and an excellent supper. The Greytown Horticultural Society will hand over £42 to the Soldiers' Memorial Park Gates Fund, being the proceeds of the recent show and handed back prize money. The Society has decided to hold an autumn show in March. The school sports held at Carterton yesterday were a big success, and rereflected to the credit of those controlling them. The sports take the place of the annual picnic, and each child successful in the numerous events is with a prize at the "brcak-ing-up" ceremony. Master Dudley Feast, eldest son of Mr. Arthur Feast, of Carterton, won the cadet shooting championship • at Trentham on Saturday last. Master Feast also secured prominence at the recent Wellington College sports. He is coming home this week, and after the holidays will join the staff of the Carterton branch of the Bank of New South Wales. There was a crowded attendance at the King's Theatre, Carterton, last night, when the Lansdowne - School pupils presented "The Rajah of Rajahpore." The performance and performers have already been extolled in print, but not in exaggerated terms. At the conclusion of the entertainment the performers were treated to a tasty supper.
